John Kenneth “Ken” Long, Jr., 73, of Shippensburg, died Tuesday, December 9, 2014 in Green Ridge Village, Newville.
He was born September 17, 1941 in Shippensburg, PA. Ken was a son of L. Kathryn Watson Long of Chambersburg and the late John Kenneth Long, Sr.
After retiring from teaching Biology at Shippensburg Area School District for 32 years he worked with the PA Dept. of Agriculture as a Seasonal Plant Inspector, Botany Lab Assistant and Integrated Pest Management Assistant for 9 years.
Ken was attending church in Carlisle at the First Church of God. His hobbies include almost anything nature related, bird watching, insect study, collecting and preparing natural history specimens. Ken was also into family genealogy.
In addition to his mother, Ken is survived by his wife, Twila B. Book Long whom he married April 1, 1967. Ken is also survived by three sisters, Mary Ann Fogelsanger, and Dorothy J. (Mick) Martin both of Shippensburg, and Linda K. (Ed) Rosenberry of Carlisle, and numerous nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Friday, December 12, 2014 at the Carlisle First Church of God at 705 Glendale St. Carlisle, PA 17013. Officiating will be The Rev. Michael Poe. Interment will occur at 2:00 p.m., on Sunday, December 14, 2014, in the Spring Hill Cemetery, Shippensburg. A visitation will be held from 8:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m., at the church on Friday morning.
