John D. “Pete” Byers, Sr., 90, of Shippensburg, passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2018 at the Orrstown Personal Care Home, with his loving wife of 70 years by his side.
Born Wednesday, November 30, 1927 in Shippensburg, he was a son of the late Harry N. and Gertrude Wolfe Byers.
John was a United States Army Veteran serving in WWII. He was a member of the Memorial Lutheran Church, Shippensburg. John retired in 1989 from Hoffman Mills where he worked for 41 years.
He was a member of the Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post # 223, a member of the Durff-Kuhn VFW Post # 6168, and a Life member of the Vigilant Hose Company, all in Shippensburg.
He was an avid local trout fisherman.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Ethel M. Henry Byers, whom he married May 1, 1948; one son, John D. (wife Cindy) Byers, Jr., Shippensburg; one daughter, Catherine E. (husband Dennis) Mowery, Monroe, NC; two brothers, Gerald T. Byers, Mechanicsburg, and Stephen F. Byers, Westlake, OH; three grandsons, James Byers, John D. Byers, III, and Andrew Mowery; one granddaughter, Amy C. Craig; and six great grandsons, Owen Jared Shapiro, Peyton James Craig, Shiloh River Waddell, Cameron Daniel Byers, Bryson Daniel Byers, and Jaxon Daniel Carbaugh.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Harry N. Byers, Jr., Stanley L. Byers, Richard L. Byers, and Gene Byers, two sisters, Betty L. Welch, and Patricia A. Jensen.
Funeral services and burial will be private.
