Joan W. Showaker, 69, formerly of Newville, departed this life on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 at the Chambersburg Hospital. For the past few years she resided at the Chambersburg Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born Saturday, March 13, 1954, in Chambersburg, she was a daughter of the late Sarah (Barrick) and John Nelson Wingert. She married Donald E. Showaker on June 26, 1976, who preceded her in death on March 25, 2000.
Joan spent the majority of her life working as a certified nursing assistant in many Carlisle nursing homes and as a laborer for the former McCoy’s Crystal Company in Carlisle. She also worked in childcare and was a foster parent for many children. Joan was a volunteer at the Frankford School as a librarian and a PTA mother for four years. In her free time she enjoyed crafting, gardening, and flowers. Joan spent many days at yard sales and always found time to paint pottery or make candles. She was a long-time, devoted member and Sunday school teacher at the former Carlisle Brethren in Christ Church.
Joan is survived by one sister, Jocelyn Wingert of Pleasant Hall; and many, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents and her husband of twenty-four years, she was preceded by a daughter, Hannah Rene Showaker who passed away on January 22, 2003; and a companion of 12 years, Charles Evans who passed away on December 23, 2014.
Joan’s funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc. with Pastor Bob Verno officiating. Burial will follow at the New Guilford Cemetery. Viewing will be held one hour prior to the service on Tuesday afternoon at the funeral home.
