Janet Hershey, 85, of Orrstown, died unexpectedly during the late evening hours of Friday, August 28, 2015, at her home.
She was born on November 7, 1929, in Lurgan, a daughter of the late Norman and Marget Daugherty Diehl, Sr. Janet married Bruce C. Hershey on May 21, 1949, in West Virginia. He preceded her in death just four months ago, on April 21, 2015, after 65 years of marriage.
Janet was employed in the Accounting Department at the Letterkenny Army Depot, retiring in 1985 after 35 years of employment.
She was a member of the Prince Street United Brethren Church; the Fort Morris A.A.R.P. #2525; and the Shippensburg Tops Club. She was very active and energetic; always taking her morning walk; landscaping and gardening all over her property; and feeding and watching the birds around her home. She would watch any type of sport, even different games on different televisions at the same time, and she knew all teams, players, statistics, and terminology of all of them. Janet always spent a lot of time with her late husband Bruce, mostly helping with a lot of his building projects and taking an occasional trip, but she preferred to stay around home and keep busy.
Janet is survived by her two sons, Steven D. (Mary Ann) Hershey of Shippensburg and Gregory L. (Kathleen Lysher) Hershey, Sr., of Orrstown; her sister, Dolores “Dimps” Mowery of Shippensburg; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Janet was preceded in death by her three brothers, Gerald, Norman, and Dana Diehl.
Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Wednesday, September 2, 2015, at the Prince Street United Brethren Church. The Rev. James O. Bolich will officiate. Interment will follow in the Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens. Viewing will be Tuesday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday morning at church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Prince Street United Brethren Church at 17 North Penn Street Shippensburg, PA 17257.
