James Saylor

James J. “Jim” Saylor, 80, of Newburg, passed away Monday, August 23, 2021 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Born Sunday, June 8, 1941 in Todd, Huntingdon County, he was a son of the late James M. and Marjorie Drake Saylor.

Jim was a 1959 graduate of Robertsdale High School in Huntingdon County. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Shippensburg University in 1963 and his Master’s Degree from Penn State University.

Jim retired from the Shippensburg School District in 2002 after 39 years of service as a science teacher. He was an assistant wrestling coach at the Shippensburg Area Senior High School.

He was a member of the Newburg First Church of God for 47 years, taught Sunday School class, and served on the church board. He was a devoted Christian and read the Bible daily.

He was a private pilot and enjoyed traveling all over the United States with his wife Willa. He was a very strong supporter of America’s freedom.

Jim was very mechanically talented, he designed and built his own passive solar home. He enjoyed working in his shop, the outdoors, hiking, backpacking, and hunting. He loved playing guitar and singing Blue Grass music.

Jim loved and cherished his family and friends, and will be sadly missed by all that knew him.

He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Willa G. Baker Saylor whom he married June 27, 1970; one son, Jimmy G. (Nicole) Saylor, Chambersburg; one daughter, Laura G. Saylor, Kansas City, KS; four grandchildren, Kassy R. Fletcher, Kayden M. Fletcher, J. Marvin Saylor, and Jeremiah G. Saylor, all of Chambersburg; two sisters, Carol (Jim) Hannon, Lewistown, and Nancy Jeffries, Mill Creek; two brothers, Max Saylor, Broad Top, and Gail (Linda) Saylor, Todd, PA.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Tye Schrock, Betty Jane Horton, and Martha Blair; and one brother, David Saylor.

A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, August 28, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. in the Newburg First Church of God, with Pastor Jim Moss, Jr. and the Rev. Dale H. Miller, Jr. officiating. Burial will be private. A visitation will be held immediately following the service in the church.
