James T. Hafer, 86, of Chambersburg, went to heaven to share eternity with his Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ on Thursday, November 9, 2023 at the Chambers Pointe Health Care Center.
He was born on November 5, 1937 in Hagerstown, Maryland, a son of the late Clyde T. Hafer and Grace Hannah (Risbon) Hafer.
James was a 1959 graduate of Shippensburg University, where he majored in mathematics. He worked for the Department of the Army for 35 years prior to his retirement in December of 1995. James was also a dedicated member of the Upper Strasburg Church of God, where he helped in Bible studies and quiz teams. He loved to go fly fishing and hunting, but most importantly, cherished spending time with his family.
James is survived by his wife of 53 years, Gretchen Ann (Gribble) Moats Hafer, whom he married on October 3, 1970; five children, Dr. Charlene E. (Hafer) Macko and husband Rich of Ellicott City, MD, Steven T. Hafer of Bloomington, IN, Stephan R. Moats and wife Kim of Frisco, TX, Joel Michael Moats and wife Danielle of Newburg, and Gregory A. Moats and wife Sheila of Chambersburg; 10 grandchildren, Jennifer and Nathan Macko, Alexandra and Elijah Hafer, and Kaitlyn, Jacob, Julianne, Greta, Emma, and Jordan Moats.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Paul Hafer.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 17, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at the Upper Strasburg Church of God with Pastor Tim Redmond officiating. Burial will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.
