Then in 1980 he changed his rating to Aviation Boatswain Mate, upon serving aboard the USS Saratoga (CV-60) and USS Kennedy (CV-67). Jim retired from the Navy in 1992, at Strike Aircraft, Naval Aviation Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) as a First-Class Aviation Boatswain Mate; after serving 20 years of military service.

In 1980, while stationed at Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico, he met his wife, Brenda and spent the next 44 years with her, building their family together. He is survived by his wife, Brenda (McMillan) Alexander, their two sons, Daniel James Alexander; Matthew Scot Alexander and his grandson; William Patrick Alexander. He is also survived by his sister; Priscilla Buttry (her husband Bradley). He is preceded in death by his father, Wayne Harrison Alexander and his mother, Margaret (Spangler) Erwin.

Jim loved his family, traveling with his wife, eating cheddar cheese and drinking coffee. He loved being a cat dad, he enjoyed delivering Meals on Wheels and sharing corny jokes.
