Jack Mellott

Jack G. “Digger” Mellott, 97, of Shippensburg, passed away Friday, February 23, 2024 at Luther Ridge, Chambersburg, surrounded by his loving family.

Born Tuesday, March 2, 1926 in McConnellsburg, Fulton County, he was a son of the late Ahimaaz “Jack and Bertha Mabel May Mellott.

Jack was a United States Navy Veteran serving at Pearl Harbor, Okinawa, Guam, and Nagasaki during WWII.

After being discharged from the Navy, Jack finished his GED at night while working at Ken Kauffman Plumbing and Heating from 1946-1962; he owned and operated his own plumbing, heating, and excavating business from 1962 until 1971; he worked part-time as a Shippensburg Police Officer from 1968 until 1970; and he later retired from the Shippensburg University as a Physical Plant Supervisor where he worked from 1972 until his retirement in 1988.

Jack was a member of the Shippensburg First Church of God; he was a post member of the Durff-Kuhn VFW Post # 6168, and the Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post # 223, both in Shippensburg; and the illustrious McDonalds Morning Breakfast Group.

He loved golfing, and bowled a 300 at Jay Wright’s bowling alley. Jack enjoyed working outside and maintaining his home and property.

Jack is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nancy Mangle Mellott whom he married November 14, 1970; five daughters, Michele R. (Bud) Brandt, Shippensburg, Susan (Warren) Robinson, Newburg, Shanda L. (friend Rick Weller) Mellott, Shippensburg, Donna (Wade) Swanger, Gettysburg, and CarolAnn (Ron) Franklin, Shippensburg; one son, Jack G. (Sharon) Mellott, Jr., Roxbury; nine granddaughters; one grandson; three great-granddaughters; and three great-grandsons.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Flory Mellott; second wife, Katherine “Kate” Garrett Mellott; and twin brothers, Foster and Forest Mellott.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, February 28, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. in the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium Inc., with Pastor Gary Hornbaker officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post #223 Minutemen. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service on Wednesday in the funeral home.
