Irvin W. “Junior” Bowers, 84, of Walnut Bottom, died Friday, May 6, 2011 in his home.
Born May 15, 1926 in Shippensburg, PA, he was a son of the late Irvin S. and Grace A. Warren Bowers.
Irvin was the owner of the Brookside AG Market in Walnut Bottom until 1985 and was a United States Army Veteran of World War II.
He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Walnut Bottom and attended the Shippensburg Church of the Brethren. Irvin was a former President of the South Newton Volunteer Fire Company, a member of their Fire Police and the Walnut Bottom Lions Club. He was a member of the Cumberland Valley Lodge # 315 F. & A.M. in Shippensburg and Valley Forest # 145 Tall Cedars of Lebanon.
Irvin enjoyed the Carlisle Ravens Pool League, golfing, fishing, hunting, and was an avid Philadelphia Phillies fan.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, M. Rachel Foreman Bowers who died January 11, 2004.
Irvin is survived by his wife, Betty K. Shields Hoover and her children; Sherann, Lisa, Roxanne and Johnny Ray, one daughter, M. Sandra Kempf and her husband Richard J. of Naples, FL, one granddaughter, Gwendolyn Aboutboul and her husband Jacob, one grandson, Richard T. Kempf, two great grandchildren; Lee-Elle M. and Noa A. Aboutboul all of Rehoboth Beach, DE, and one sister, Betty J. Donovan of Walnut Bottom.
Graveside services with military honors conducted by the Shippensburg VFW and American Legion Marching Units will be held Thursday May 12, 2011 in the Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens at 10 a.m. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. J. Gerald Greiner. The viewing will be held Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. in the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home Inc., Shippensburg.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the South Newton Twp. Volunteer Fire Company, P.O. Box 49, Walnut Bottom, PA 17266.
