Irene (Rene) Menton of Shippensburg PA, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 29, 2018. Rene, born on February 3, 1933, was the daughter of Elwood and Mary Getsinger. She graduated from Bridgeton High School, Bridgeton NJ in 1951. While attending Montclair University in New Jersey, she met her future husband Frank Menton who was studying nearby at Stevens Institute. They were married on December 5, 1953.
Rene’s talents were many. She loved to play the piano and paint, was an accomplished cook, enjoyed holidays surrounded by family and friends, taught school for several years, and was a beloved wife, sister, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She enjoyed the warm friendship of her sorority sisters in Beta Sigma Phi. Rene has lived in communities from the east coast to the west coast, residing in Shippensburg since 1990. No matter where lived, she was an active member of the Methodist church where over time she has sang in or directed the choir, been the church pianist, and served as a Sunday school teacher. Most recently she has been a member of the Christ United Methodist Church in Shippensburg, Pa.
Rene was preceded in death by her parents, Elwood and Mary Getsinger, and a close cousin, Mary Lou Freiling, who was raised as a sister in the same household. She is survived by her husband of 65 years Frank Menton, Sr., of Shippensburg; sister Ann Timmons (husband James) of The Villages, FL; son Ronald Menton (wife Martha) of Billerica MA; son Richard Menton (wife Marie) of Haymarket, VA; son Martin Menton (wife Vicki) of Tulsa, OK; daughter Michelle Cathcart of Owasso, OK; son Frank Menton, Jr. (wife Dawna) of Greencastle, PA; son Steven Menton (partner Marsha) of Boiling Springs, PA; 16 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 AM, on Wednesday, June 6, 2018, at the Christ United Methodist Church, with Pastor Sandra Kraft officiating. If desired, friends may make memorial contributions to the Christ United Methodist Church, 47 E King St. Shippensburg, PA 17257.
