Irene E. Coons, 97, of Shippensburg, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 21, 2011 surrounded by her loving family at the home of her granddaughter, Michelle R. Stouffer and her husband Andy.
Born October 25, 1913 in McConnellsburg, she was a daughter of the late John Elmer and Alice Annie McCullough Rhodes.
Irene was a member of the Church of Christ, Carlisle and attended the Shippensburg Church of the Nazarene. She volunteered at Green Ridge Village, she loved working on word searches, gardening, quilting and sewing.
Irene loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and will be sadly missed.
Surviving is six sons; Thomas R., Marlin L., Jackie I. and his wife Barb, David “Sonny” and his wife Dixie, Johnnie A. and Stanley Coons and his wife Virginia, all of Shippensburg, six daughters; Dixie L. Weaver and her husband Ron, Orrstown, Connie E. Kelley and her husband, Dexter, Newville, Darlene Kelley, Plainfield, Bonnie M. Armolt, Shippensburg, Alice Golden, Newville and Dorothy J. Keefer, Shippensburg. Irene was also blessed with numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Franklin Coons who died in February 1974, three sons; Mikey, Frankie and Eddie Coons, one daughter Mildred Atherton and eight brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 27, 2011 at 10:00 A.M. in the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home Inc. with the Rev. Todd A. Risser officiating. Burial will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens. A viewing will be Wednesday, from 5:00 until 8:00 P.M. in the funeral home.
