Howard Strawmyre

Howard R. “Doc” Strawmyre, 95, of Shippensburg, died Sunday, March 29, 2015.

Born September 11, 1919 in Altoona, he was a son of the late Charles F. and Ella Dull Strawmyre.
He retired in 1985 from the Chambersburg Area School District with 28 years of service as a biology and driver’s education teacher.

Howard was a 1939 graduate of Altoona High School, a 1950 graduate of Shippensburg University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education.

He was an athletic trainer at the Chambersburg High School for many years, head trainer for the Big 33 Football Classic from 1964 until 1985, a part-time assistant athletic trainer at Shippensburg University until 1996, and participated as a trainer at the Philadelphia Eagles training camp in 1964. He was a founding member of the Central PA Athletic Training Association and was inducted into the PA Sports Hall of Fame in November 2011.

He was a member of the Oakville United Methodist Church since 1948, where he held many positions over the years and was a Sunday School teacher. He was also a member of Cumberland Valley Lodge #315 F. & A.M., Harrisburg Consistory, Shippensburg Scottish Rite Club, Hub City Club, and a life Member of Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post #223 and Durff-Kuhn VFW Post #6168.

He was a United States Navy veteran of World War 2, having served on PT boats.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Anna Lutz Strawmyre, who died May 27, 2002, and was the last of his immediate family.

He is survived by one son, Konrad Strawmyre and his wife SuEllen, of Newburg, one daughter, Deborah Cramer and her husband Michael, of Wenonah, NJ, three grandchildren, Ellen and Casey Strawmyre, both of Shippensburg, and Matthew Cramer, of Wyndham, VA.

Memorial services will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, April 10, 2015 in the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc., Shippensburg. The Rev. Miguel H. Arenas will officiate. Private burial with military honors conducted by the Shippensburg Veterans Council will be in Spring Hill Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Shippensburg University Foundation/Red Raider Football, 1871 Old Main Drive, Shippensburg, PA 17257.
