Howard Burkholder

February 19, 1939 — June 30, 2016

Howard K. “Red” Burkholder, 77, of Chambersburg, departed this life on the morning of Thursday, June 30, 2016 at Menno Haven.

He was born on February 19, 1939, in Chambersburg, a son of the late Wilbur K. and Laura M. Poper Burkholder. Howard was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Army. He married Margaret Rotz on February 23, 1980 at the Air Hill Brethren in Christ Church.

Howard worked for twenty nine years as an electrician at Shippensburg University, retiring in 1997. After retirement, he drove for Bricker and Boyo Transportation as a substitute bus driver.

He was a member of the Air Hill Brethren in Christ Church and had been volunteering at Menno Haven for the past eleven years. Howard was a life member of the N.R.A., the American Hunting Club, and the Shippensburg Fish and Game. He was an avid outdoorsman who liked to hunt, fish, and play golf. Howard was well known around the state as an accomplished and highly decorated trap shooter, who mentored many others, while participating in the sport for over fifty years.

He is survived by his spouse of thirty-six years, Margaret; one brother, Ronald (Betty) Burkholder of West Memphis, AR; seven sisters, Virginia Horn of Chambersburg, Betty Burkholder, Frances Burkholder, Linda (Bob) Russell, Marybelle Burkholder, Esther Burkholder, all of Shippensburg, and Patricia (Felton) Achord of Little Rock, AR; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Howard was preceded in death by one sister, Martha Hostetter and one brother, Dennis Burkholder.

His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 5, 2016, at the Air Hill Brethren in Christ Church. The Rev. Charles Naylor and Rev. Jason Wenger will officiate. Interment, with military honors conducted by the Shippensburg Area Veterans Council, will follow in the Air Hill Cemetery. Due to the holiday, Howard’s viewing will be Sunday evening, July 3, 2016, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc., Shippensburg, and one hour prior to the service on Tuesday morning at church.
