Herman Kuhnert

Herman John Kuhnert, Jr., succumbed to his eight-year battle with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma at his cottage at Chambers Pointe on the morning of May 3.
Herman was the second born son of the late Herman John and Helen (Dengler) Kuhnert on February 15, 1938, in Oberlin, PA.
Boots was a member of the first graduating class of Central Dauphin High School in 1956 and attended Millersville State Teachers College for one year. He then graduated from Carnegie College of Medical Technology in Cleveland, Ohio, as well as Florida Southern College, and received his Master’s Degree in cellular biology from New Mexico Highlands University.
John taught one semester at Greencastle-Antrim School District and also one semester at Fannett-Metal School District. He was instrumental in establishing the Certified Laboratory Assistant School at the Chambersburg Hospital and served as its educational coordinator for 25 years, retiring in 1993.
He retired to Florida but later moved back to his beloved Amberson Valley and became an apprentice at the Lone Oak Broom Shop, creating decorative carved brooms.
John was a member of the Park Avenue United Methodist Church in Chambersburg as well as the path Valley Lions Club, where he served as a director for several years. He was also a member of the Cumberland Valley Woodcarvers Club and the Amberson Valley Historical Society, serving as the first president. The joy of his life continued to be that he was a founding member of the former Amberson Valley Cattlemen’s Association.
He is survived by his wife of sixteen years, Brenda J. (Hoch) Kuhnert, whom he married on May 21, 2005, in Pleasant Gap, PA. He has one daughter, Sue Ellen Beggs and husband James of Vienna, Virginia; two grandchildren, Greta and James; and one step-son, Jeffrey B. Cohick and wife Stacey of Orrstown.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty (Lamaster) Kuhnert; and two brothers, Robert and Richard.
A memorial service will be held at the Amberson United Methodist Church at 18889 Amberson Road, Spring Run, PA 17262, on Saturday, May 22, at 11:00 a.m., with Pastors Darwin Goshorn and Layne Miller-Vizthum officiating. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Doubling Gap Center, Camp YoliJwa at 1550 Doubling Gap Road, Newville, PA 17241, or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital at 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN, 38105.
