Herbert Sommerville

April 20, 1940 — December 12, 2022

Herbert A. “Herb” Sommerville, 82, lifelong resident of Shippensburg, passed away the morning of Monday, December 12, 2022 at his home.

He was born on April 20, 1940 in Carlisle, a son of the late Herbert Strayer and Anna Catherine (O’Donnell) Sommerville. He was adopted and raised by the late Wayne R. Sommerville.

Herb was a United States Navy Veteran. He was a member of the American Legion Post #223 and dedicated member of their Honor Guard. He joined the Minutemen in 1972 and served as president since 1976. Anyone who knew Herb knew that he took great pride, alongside his fellow Minutemen, in providing veterans of Shippensburg and surrounding communities with military honors.

In addition to his active participation in the Minutemen of the American Legion Post #223, he was a member of the Shippensburg Legion S.A.L., Eagles #1299 Carlisle, Yellow Breeches Anglers Association, and the Shippensburg Moose #2500. Herb was also a lifetime member of the Marine Corps Club, Chambersburg, Walnut Bottom Rod and Gun Club, Big Spring Fish and Game Association, Hub City Club, VFW Post #6168, and the Minnequa Social Club.

Herb enjoyed woodworking, hunting, and fishing. He especially loved all the flounder fishing vacations he took to Ocean City, Maryland with his wife, Penny.

He is survived by his wife of 43 years Pennelope A. “Penny” (Noragong) Sommerville; one son, Colby (Karla) Neil; six grandchildren, Josh (Cara) Neil, Erik Neil, Emily (Jacob) Payne, John Bouder, Coltan Bouder, and Elizabeth Bouder. ; three great-grandchildren, Ellie Neil, Maggie Payne, and Jackson Payne; eight siblings, George (Nancy) Strayer of Newburg, Cathy (Don) Mohler of Scotland, Karen (Bob) Mathna of Shippensburg, Lisa (Les) Funk of Newburg, Ann Gaver of Scotland, Richard Sommerville of Dover, Jimmy (Aurea) Sommerville of North Carolina, and Don (Jane) Chamberlin of Orrstown; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three siblings, Kim Strayer, Gary Sommerville, and Bob (Betty) Sommerville.

A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, December 18, 2022 at 3:30 p.m. in the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc., Shippensburg. Pastor David S. Halteman will officiate. A time of visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Sunday at the funeral home. Herb will be privately laid to rest in the Parklawns Memorial Gardens.
