Herbert E. Hays, Jr., 85, of Shippensburg, died on the morning of Saturday, June 20, 2015, at his home.
He was born on November 6, 1929, in Hagerstown, MD, a son of the late Herbert E. and Helen C. Mills Hays, Sr. Herbert was United States Army veteran of W.W. II., serving during the occupation of Japan. He was awarded the W.W. II Victory Medal and the Army or Occupation, Japan medal. He was a life member of the Durff-Kuhn V.F.W. post #6168, Shippensburg.
Dr. Hays was Professor Emeritus at Shippensburg University. He earned his doctorate in Zoology from West Virginia University, his M.S. in Zoology from Penn State University, and a B.S. in Education with a biology major from Shippensburg State Teacher’s College.
During his tenure at S.U., he served as president of the Marine Science Consortium and frequently taught marine biology at Wallops Island, VA. He also conducted research cruises in the Caribbean and North Atlantic, studying the behavior of Humpback Whales.
In addition to his wife of 65 years, Joyce A. Brown Hays, he is survived by his son, John E. Hays and wife Jane of Mechanicsburg; one daughter, Jody A Raymond and husband Michael of Wyalusing; his sister, Gwendolyn Osborne of Savannah, GA; son-in-law, Kirk Manchester of Rome; five granddaughters; five step-grandchildren; one great granddaughter; and one great grandson.
In addition to his parents, Herbert was preceded in death by one daughter, Vicki L. Manchester; and his brother, Richard Hays.
His memorial service and interment, in the Spring Hill Cemetery, Shippensburg, will be private. There will be no public viewing or visitation.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the S.U. Foundation Kresge Science Initiative.
