Henrietta Mae Pharo, called “Penny” by all of her family and friends, died peacefully in her sleep on March 30, 2016. She was born on December 3, 1936 in Quincy, PA. She was the daughter of the late John G. Sr. and Louise V. Haugh Pharo.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Michael Brady Strohm and his father, Melvin Brady Strohm. Mike died at a young age, but he remained the greatest joy of Penny’s life. Also two brothers, Charles and John Pharo, preceded her in death.
Surviving are her nieces and nephews, George and Diane Pharo and their daughter Julie, Joe Pharo, Tammy and Steve Sprecher and their daughter Elise, and John Pharo, II. She is also survived by special friends who consider it a blessing to have known her-Eddie Jumper, Ellen Gsell, Paula Hamilton, and Janora Hovetter.
Penny spent her early years in the Waynesboro Area, until her mother and father moved the family to a farm near Roxbury in Lurgan Township. She and her former husband Melvin bought the family farm, and that is where they raised their son Mike. She graduated from the former Chambersburg High School in 1954, and then attended the Harrisburg Hospital School of Nursing. She graduated and became a Registered Nurse in 1957. She worked most of her nursing career at the Chambersburg Hospital, starting in the Maternity Ward, then moving to the Emergency Care Unit, and finally finishing her career in the Same Day Services Unit, specializing in gastroenterology nursing. Caring and compassion came easily to her, and she served as an example and mentor to many other health care professionals.
Her retirement years were spent traveling, needleworking, dancing, fishing, gardening and caring for her beloved cats. Charley and Harley were her “Boys”, and were her constant companions during the last days of her life.
There will be a viewing on Saturday afternoon, April 2nd from 2-4 p.m. at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, 112 West King Street, Shippensburg, PA. At her request, she will be cremated and there will be no funeral services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter, 5051 Letterkenny Road, Chambersburg, PA 17201.
