Helen Mathna

January 29, 1925 — June 11, 2015

Helen Margaret Hoover Mathna, 90 of Washington Street, Shippensburg, a resident at Green Ridge Village, Newville, died June 11, 2015 in the Chambersburg Hospital.

Born Thursday, January 29, 1925 in Newburg, she was the daughter of the late John Clarence and Lotti G. Wagner Hoover. Helen married Dana C. Mathna on June 29, 1946. He preceded her in death on January 19, 2014.

Helen was a 1942 graduate of Shippensburg Senior High School. She was a member of the Shippensburg First Church of God for 78 years, where she served in the Nursery and taught Sunday School in the Children’s Department and served as Deaconess for many years. In addition to other areas of ministry, Helen was also a member of the Berean Sunday School Class. Most importantly, Helen loved and cherished her family.

Helen was primarily a homemaker, upon her husband’s retirement she enjoyed working with him as a custodian at the Shippensburg First Church of God.

Surviving are two daughters, Janet L. (Dennis) Walls of Enola, and Barbara A. Mathna of Elizabethtown, three sons, D. Alan (Sharon) Mathna of Chambersburg, Ronald L. (Rae) Mathna of Newville, and Richard L. (Darlene) Mathna of Shippensburg, one granddaughter, Brooke E. Mathna of Graceton, one grandson, Tyler C. Mathna of Newville and his Fiancée Emma Beachy of Carlisle, one step grandson, Justin B. (Kristi) Davidson of Dillsburg and two step great- grandchildren, Conner and Reese.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Randall Scott Mathna, two brothers, Glenn and Clair Hoover and a sister, Ruth Taylor.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 16, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in the Shippensburg First Church of God with Pastor James Rogers, Pastor H. Marc Nelson, and Pastor William E. Myers officiating. Burial will be in Cumberland Valley Memorial Gardens. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service in the church.
