Helen F. Hykes, 94, of Shippensburg, departed this life on the morning of Monday, December 4, 2023, at the Shippensburg Health Care Center.
She was born on December 29, 1928, in New Cumberland, a daughter of the late Calvin L. and Anna (Rothrock) Faust. Helen was a 1946 graduate of New Cumberland High School. She married Robert M. Hykes, Jr., in January of 1952. He preceded her in death on October 30, 1996.
Early in life, Helen worked at Fisher’s Florist, Shippensburg, prior to having her two sons. Afterward she became a consummate homemaker taking care of her family in all ways.
Helen was a very active, longtime member of the Messiah United Methodist Church. She taught Sunday School for many years and was the founding director of the Junior Choir, which she led for 25 years. Helen was also an integral part of Camp Penn, Waynesboro for over 25 years. It was there where she met her husband, Robert. Together at the camp, they were summer managers and enjoyed spending lots of time with their family. It became a very special place and important part of her life.
She is survived by two sons, John R. Hykes of Shippensburg, and David A. Hykes and his wife Diane of Waynesboro; a granddaughter, Amanda S. Davis and her husband Taylor of Hagerstown, MD; three great grandchildren, Avery, Grace, and Robert Davis, all of Hagerstown, MD; and several nieces.
In addition to her parents and husband, Helen was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.
Her funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc., Shippensburg. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, December 8, 2023, at the Spring Hill Cemetery with The Rev. Dr. Francis H. Norton officiating. There will be no public viewing or visitation.
