Helen D. Aby, 90, of Shippensburg, passed away Wednesday, August 15, 2018 at Claremont Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, Carlisle.
Born Wednesday, June 6, 1928 in Carlisle, she was a daughter of the late Samuel and Mary Bittinger Hawkins.
She was a member of the Huntsdale Church of the Brethren, where she served as Deacon, taught Sunday School, and was on many church committees. Helen was also active in The Neighborhood Club, and many other Church functions.
Helen and her husband owned and operated a small farm where she grew garden vegetables and flowers. They delivered The News Chronicle, and she knew everyone’s name on her route. She also loved quilting.
She is survived by two sons, Gary L. ( Darlene) Aby, Shippensburg, and Samuel E. ( Terry Bell) Aby, Charleston, SC.; three grandsons, Eric A. Aby, Carlisle, Matthew T. Grimm, Carlisle, and Marcus V. (Renee) Aby, Newville; two great granddaughters, Kailey L. Aby, Shippensburg, and Makayla A. Aby, Newville; one brother, Wayne A. (Pat) Hawkins, Shippensburg; four sisters, Edna Mellott, Glenna (Les) Smith, Irene (Larry) McGill, Ethel Warner, and daughter in-law Debra Aby, Carlisle. Helen helped raise her brothers, sisters, and many foster children.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry A. “Dick” Aby, who died August 2, 2006, one son, Rodney E. Aby, who died January 24, 2018, three brothers, three sisters, and two half-brothers.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. in the Huntsdale Church of the Brethren, with Pastor Darlene Stouffer and Pastor Jan Custer officiating. Burial will be in the Huntsdale Church of the Brethren Cemetery. A viewing will be held Monday from 6:00 until 8:00 at the Church and also one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.
