Hazel S. Diller, 90 of Mechanicsburg, PA, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 19, 2013.
She was born July 11, 1922, daughter of the late Roy and Margaret Garman. Hazel was born in Hays Grove, PA.
After living in New York and Massachusetts, she returned to Hays Grove in 1963, where she raised her five children at the base of her beloved South Mountain.
After Hazel retired from her job at PPG, she set out to fulfill her childhood dream and hiked the entire Appalachian Trail, from Georgia to Maine, at the age of 67, thrilling her loved ones with tales of her adventures and earning the honored trail name “Crazy Hazel”. Hazel will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
She is preceded in death by her two husbands, Harry J. Sheaffer and Reuben Diller, as well as her sister, Dorothy Leone.
Hazel is survived by her children: Margaret Sheaffer; Richard Sheaffer; James Sheaffer; Catherine Sheaffer; and Nan Altman; and her sister Ruth Washington. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and a host of in-laws, friends, and neighbors who loved her dearly.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 23, 2013 in the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home Inc., Shippensburg at 2 p.m. Officiating will be The Rev. Barbara A. Servello. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. There will be no viewing, however a visitation will be held one hour prior to the services in the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made in Hazel Diller’s name to Lifeways at Messiah Village, 100 Mt. Allen Drive, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055.
