Gretchen French Kieffer, 83, died peacefully in her sleep on the evening of Tuesday, June 25, 2019. Originally from Chambersburg, a well-traveled individual, calling many places home including Greenland, Virginia, England, Maryland, Michigan, Illinois, California, New Mexico and more.
She was born on February 17, 1936, in Chambersburg, a daughter of the late Dick H. Kieffer and Ida French (Carroll).
Gretchen worked for the U.S. Government as a Reutilization Specialist for many years (recycling long before it was cool) retiring in 1999.
Gretchen enjoyed traveling, knitting, sewing, reading and antiquing.
She is survived by her eight children: Erin French Kissinger, Joel Kissinger and wife Sue, Dirk Kissinger and wife Donna of Shippensburg, Todd Kissinger and partner Shannon of Chesterfield, VA, Lara Carroll Verhoef of Greencastle, Amye Peacock and husband David of Jonesboro, AR, Gwen Muir and husband Pete of West Chester and Page Kissinger (favorite) and husband Dennis also of Shippensburg; twenty-four grandchildren: Jordan Kissinger, Autumn Cool and husband Steve, Elizabeth Kissinger, Sarah Kissinger, Ben Burgess and wife Rana, Nathan Serino and wife Cece, Adam Serino and wife Jen, Andrew Kissinger and wife Ashley, Justin Rowles, Chloe Kissinger, Jake Kissinger, Owen Kissinger, Keegan Kissinger, Katie Kissinger, Colton Kissinger, Hannah Kissinger, Drew Kissinger, Lauren Verhoef and Rachel Verhoef, Megan Talbott, Nick Arriviello, Veronica Muir, Margaret Gutshall and Tyler Gutshall; ten great-grandchildren: Dylan, Mia, Lillian, Isaac, Noah, Ethan, Luke, Michael, Lutz, and Bodhi; a sister Gwen Alleman and husband Dennis; and a nephew Scott Alleman and wife Mykell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandchild Lillian Kissinger; her step-mother, Edna Kieffer; and close family friends, Jan Fedock and Winfrey Ruffin.
Special thanks to caregiver (and family member), Mary Serino, who cared for her as if she were her own mother with love, respect and compassion, allowing her to live at home as long as possible.
Gretchen has elected to donate her body to Humanity Gifts Registry. Her donation will provide future healthcare providers an invaluable opportunity to learn and discover the human body, or, as described to her grandchildren, “a human text book.”
