Gertrude E. Greey, 94, of Shippensburg, departed this life on the morning of Friday, August 19, 2022, at Penn State Health Holy Spirit Medical Center.
She was born on April 18, 1928, in Marshfield, Wisconsin, a daughter of the late Joseph and Gertrude (Felker) Pinion. Gertrude was a 1949 graduate of Rosary College, River Forest, IL, and earned her Master’s Degree in music from Marlboro College, Marlboro, VT, in 1951, where she studied flute with the French master Marcel Moyse. She married Elmer B. Greey Jr. on September 27, 1952, in Marshfield, Wisconsin. He preceded her in death on September 15, 2020.
Gertrude was a homemaker throughout her life, raising a family of five children alongside her husband Elmer. Gertrude was of the Catholic faith and was a faithful member of the Our Lady of the Visitation Catholic Church, Shippensburg. Her life was literally steeped in prayer. She prayed constantly for those around her, and for the general state of the world. Talented and well versed in music, she served as long time organist at Our Lady of the Visitation, and also played flute for the Shippensburg Town Band. She gave private music lessons in her home for many years.
Gertrude is survived by five children; son, Edward G. Greey of Berkley Heights, NJ; four daughters, Mary Hickman of Shippensburg, Catherine Harruff and husband Tom of Centerville, OH, Elizabeth Shaffer of Wilmington, DE, and Martha Duff and husband Kevin of Steubenville, OH; one sister, Charlotte Sacks of Denver, CO; twenty-three grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Gertrude was preceded in death by three sisters.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 p.m. (noon), on Thursday, August 25, 2022, in the Our Lady of the Visitation Catholic Church, Shippensburg. Father Benjamin J. Dunkelberger will officiate. Private interment will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery. Viewing will be at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc., Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 7:30 with a rosary service held at 7:30. There will also be a viewing one hour prior to Mass on Thursday at the church.
