George A. McCann, 91, a resident at Elm Croft, Shippensburg, and formerly of Mainsville Road, Shippensburg, died Sunday, May 1, 2011 in the Chambersburg Hospital.
Born February 24, 1920 in Garfield, NJ, he was a son of the late Albert Edward and Lenna S. Squires McCann.
George was a member of the Shippensburg Presbyterian Church. He was a 1937 graduate of the Shippensburg High School and a 1943 graduate of the Embry-Riddle University in Florida. George was a member of the Durff-Kuhn VFW Post 6168, Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post 223 and the Hub City Club all in Shippensburg. He also was a member of the Cumberland Valley Lodge 315 F & AM, Valley Forge Tall Cedars and the Harrisburg Consistory.
George worked at a variety of jobs. He retired from MIDA at Letterkenny Army Depot as a highly skilled systems analyst and programmer. Prior to that he was an ambulance driver and mechanic for the PA Turnpike. Before that, he ran a full service gas station, worked as an AT&T lineman, and helped finish the air handling shafts for the Blue Mountain tunnel for the PA Turnpike.
George was a United States Army Air Corps Veteran serving in WWII where at age 24, he piloted a U.S. Army B-17 in 35 attack missions over Europe during a 63 day period in 1944, dropping nearly 80 tons of explosives on targets in Germany, France, Poland and Holland. George survived his war experience nearly unscathed.
Surviving are one son; Robert T. McCann and his wife Carmen L. Lopez, and one Grandson; Gregory A. McCann, all of Aledo, TX, one brother; John E. McCann, Shippensburg.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife: Edith Main McCann, who died July 8, 2008, two brothers and two sisters.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, May 7, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. in the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home Inc. with the Rev. Dr. Steven R. Fleming officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the Shippensburg VFW and American Legion Posts. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service in the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shippensburg Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund at 12 South Prince Street, Shippensburg, PA 17257.
