George Appleby

George H. Appleby, 87, a resident of Cumberland Crossings, Carlisle, formerly of Shippensburg, died Wednesday, March 23, 2016 in the home.

Born May 31, 1928 in Ryde, PA. George was a son of the late Wayne and Gretta Kimberly Appleby.

He was a member of Grace United Church of Christ, Shippensburg. George retired as a General Foreman with Penelec, Shippensburg. George was a member of Cumberland Valley Lodge #315 F. & A.M., Tall Cedars of Lebanon Valley Forest # 145, and Harrisburg Consistory. He was a United States Air Force Veteran of the Korean War. George graduated from Mt. Union High School and received a certificate in Electrical Technology from Penn State.

He enjoyed deer hunting as well as hunting with his bird dog Prince. George also enjoyed playing golf in his retirement years. Vacations to Canada and to Hilton Head Island were especially enjoyable for Bette and George.

He is survived by his wife Bette Jane Craig Appleby, a daughter, Vicki L. Shoap and her husband Kenneth E. of Lurgan, and two sisters Marge Bard of Lewistown, and Mary Moist of Elizabethtown. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son, Eugene W. “Gene” Appleby who died May 12, 2008, a brother, Gerald Appleby, and a sister, Gene Johnson.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 31, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. in Grace United Church of Christ with The Rev. George W. Heckard officiating. Burial with military honors conducted by the Shippensburg Veterans Council will be held in Parklawns Memorial Gardens. A viewing will be held Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. in the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Shippensburg and one hour prior to the services in church on Thursday.
