Genevieve A. Smith, 85, life-long resident of Shippensburg, departed this life on the morning of Thursday, March 9, 2017, at her home.
She was born on February 13, 1932, in Shippensburg, a daughter of the late Harry J. and Iva L. Rowe Smith. Genevieve was a 1949 graduate of Shippensburg High School and earned a Bachelor’s and also a Master’s degree in Elementary Education from Shippensburg University in 1953 and 1968 respectively.
She went on to have a long career in education, teaching fifth grade at Nancy Grayson Elementary School, retiring in 1986. Genevieve was a member of the National Education Association, the Pennsylvania State Education Association, and the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees.
Genevieve was a long-time, active member of the Shippensburg First Church of God, its KYB class, was the church librarian, and a Sunday School teacher. She was also a member of the Middle Spring Presbyterian Church Ladies Group, Sisters in Strength.
Genevieve was the last surviving member of her immediate family, survived by several nieces and nephews. She was cared for in her home during her illnesses by her niece, Jackie Clark. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her sister, Winifred G. Vinson, and two brothers, Edwin A. Smith and Glenn V. Smith.
Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 18, 2017, at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc., Shippensburg. Pastor William Myers and Mr. Gary Hornbaker will officiate. Interment will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery. Viewing will be one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.
