Gene Furry

Gene G. Furry, 83, of Shippensburg, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 4, 2017 at the Shippensburg Health care Center.

Born Thursday, September 13, 1934 in Chambersburg, he was a son of the late Charles Oscar and Isabelle Geyer Furry, Sr.

Gene was a 1952 graduate of the Shippensburg Senior High School and attended the Shippensburg University. He was a United States Army Veteran serving in the Korean War. Gene was a member of the Ridge Church of the Brethren and their Helping Hands Sunday School Class. Gene retired from Letterkenny Army Depot.

He was a member of the Durff-Kuhn VFW Post #6168 where he served as Chaplain and served with their Honor Guard. He was a member of the Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post #223 both in Shippensburg. He was a past member of the Shippensburg Fly Fishing Club.

Gene was an avid angler and loved the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He will be sadly missed by all that knew him.

Surviving are three children, Tamara L. (husband George) Garrett, Mark E. (wife Sharon) Furry, and Zane D. Furry, all of Shippensburg; one sister, Beverly L. (husband John) Kendall, Egg Harbor Township, NJ; and eight grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Abigail A. Schaff Furry who died April 5, 1995, and one brother, Charles Oscar “Dick” Furry, Jr.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 11, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. in the Ridge Church of the Brethren with Pastor Leon S. Davis and Mr. Jared B. Furry officiating. Military Honors conducted by the Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post #223 Minutemen will follow the service. Burial will be private. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service in the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ridge Church of the Brethren, 1095 Ridge Road, Shippensburg, PA 17257.
