Gary L. “BIG RED “ Burkett, 65, of North Penn Street, Shippensburg, died Saturday, November 5, 2011 in the Chambersburg Hospital.
Born Tuesday, October 22, 1946 in Chambersburg, he was a son of the late Guy I. and Mildred M. Henderson Burkett.
Gary retired from the former Ingersoll-Rand, Shippensburg, where he worked as a forklift operator. Gary was a United States Army veteran serving during the Vietnam War. He attended the Great Hope Baptist Church, Carlisle, and was a life member of the Vigilant Hose Company and a member of the Cumberland Valley Hose Company and the Durff-Kuhn VFW Post # 6168 Gary was an avid hunter and BINGO player.
Surviving is his wife of 44 years, Carol E. Mellott Burkett, one son, Shawn M. Burkett and wife Christy, Shippensburg, two daughters, Kathy A. Seiders and husband Toby, Chambersburg and Angela S. Mace, Shippensburg, five grandsons, Elkin G. Seiders, Chambersburg, Gary L. Burkett, Login M. Burkett, Damien S. Reed and Dakota A. Reed all of Shippensburg and two granddaughters, Mercedes A. Seiders, Chambersburg and Jasmin E. Reed, Shippensburg.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Burkett and one sister, Joy Mellott.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at 2:00 P.M. in the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home Inc. with Pastor Dale E. Barrick officiating. Burial will be private. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service on Wednesday in the funeral home.
