Frances Edith Hayes, 86, of Shippensburg, departed this life on the afternoon of Wednesday, December 26, 2018.
She was born on February 28, 1932, in Shippensburg, a daughter of the late George and Frances Murphy Wolf and married Harvey Hayes on October 9, 1952. He preceded her in death in 1978.
Frances worked for Hallmark, where she would travel to different stores and be responsible for fixing-up the displays and replenishing the cards. She retired in 1998. Frances also did clerical work at the Letterkenny Army Depot in her younger years.
She was a member of Our Lady of the Visitation Catholic Church, Shippensburg, for over fifty years. To say she was an active member would be an understatement. Frances was a member of the Columbian Ladies; the cookbook committee; always volunteered to work the church stand at the Shippensburg Community Fair and many other fund raisers; and could always be counted on to volunteer to help with funeral luncheons.
Frances loved to cook and would always watch the cooking channel to find new recipes to try. She was a Girl Scout Leader in her younger years and Frances also volunteered at the Chambersburg Hospital for over fifteen years.
She is survived by her daughter, Justina Hayes of Shippensburg; her son, Michael (Melissa) Hayes of Shippensburg; two grandchildren, Courtney Hayes of New York and Logan Hayes (fiancé Mallory Miller) of Mercersburg; great granddaughter, Hayden Hayes of Mercersburg; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Frances was preceded in death by her sister, Mabel Watt.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Friday, January 4, 2019, at the Our Lady of the Visitation Catholic Church, Shippensburg. The Very Rev. Philip G. Berger will officiate. Interment will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery. Viewing will be one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.
