F. Howard Hancock, 92, of Shippensburg, departed this life on the morning of Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at the WellSpan Chambersburg Hospital.
He was born on August 15, 1931, in Shippensburg, the son of the late Arthur and Anna (Varner) Caldwell. Howard married D. Joann Caldwell on December 25, 1952. She preceded him in death on October 15, 2016.
Howard worked as a moulder at the former Chambersburg Engineering Company and Domestic Engine and Pump Co., Shippensburg. He also worked in maintenance at Green Ridge Village, Newville, from where he retired.
In his younger years, Howard coached Little League and was also a big fan of the Philadelphia Eagles throughout his life. He was known to be very handy, a jack-of-all trades type of guy that could fix just about anything, and he also enjoyed doing some woodworking in his spare time. Howard was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous for over forty years, a fact that he was very proud of. He was a very involved member of A.A., who sponsored countless individuals throughout his life, would travel around to speak at local meetings, and helped establish many A.A. groups, even a few in several jails and prisons. Howard was also instrumental in helping start The Harbor, which is an organization in Shippensburg that helps provide resources and support to people struggling with addiction and are on the road to recovery.
He is survived by three sons, Terrance B. Hancock and wife Nan of North Carolina, Kenneth W. Hancock of Shippensburg, and Steve A. Hancock and wife Sandy of North Carolina; two daughters, Joan C. Hancock of Shippensburg, and Tammy S. Shroyer and husband Scott of Shippensburg; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and spouse, Howard was preceded in death by several siblings.
There will be a memorial service held at a future date and time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Harbor at 55 West King Street, Shippensburg, PA 17257 or online at https://theharborbar.org/donate/.
