Esther A. Byers, 87, of Shippensburg, died on the afternoon of Wednesday, August 6, 2014, at the Hershey Medical Center surrounded by her family.
She was born on April 17, 1927, in Shippensburg, a daughter of the late Arthur and Anna Varner Hancock and attended Shippensburg Area schools. Esther married Frank D. Byers at the Missionary Alliance Church in Shippensburg. He preceded her in death on March 9, 1983.
Esther was a farm wife and homemaker throughout her life. She was a long time member of the Ridge Church of the Brethren, where she served as a deaconess; the Middle Spring Grange; served as a worker at the Shippensburg Fair; and taught bible release classes throughout the Shippensburg area.
She is survived by her daughter, Sharon D. Boyles and her husband Kenneth of Shippensburg; her son, Frank W. Byers and his wife Karen of Shippensburg; four granddaughters, Becky Barrick of Newville, Beth Carmona of McMurray, Amy Baker of Dillsburg, and Ashley Byers of Carlisle; four great grandchildren; two sisters, Daisy Mowery and Mary Smith of Shippensburg; one brother, Howard Hancock of Shippensburg; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Esther was preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.
Her funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, August 11, 2014, at the Ridge Church of the Brethren. Brother Earl F. Stovall will officiate. Interment will follow in the Ridge Cemetery. Viewing will be one hour prior to the service at church on Monday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ridge Church of the Brethren at 1095 Ridge Rd. Shippensburg, PA 17257.
