Erwin Howland

Erwin Walter “Walt” Howland, Jr., 68, of Shippensburg, departed this life during the early morning hours of Sunday, November 29, 2015, at his home surrounded by his loved ones.

He was born on May 30, 1947, in Ames, IA, a son of the late Erwin and Rebecca Blanton Howland and was a 1965 graduate of Shippensburg Area High School.

Walt enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1967, where he served until 1987, retiring as a Master Sargent. After retiring from the Air Force, Walt worked for the Department of Defense at both the Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, and the Naval Inventory Control Point (NAVICP), Mechanicsburg, retiring in 2005. While in the Air Force, Walt served in multiple countries around the world and served two tours of duty in Viet Nam.

He was a long time active member of the Memorial Lutheran Church, Shippensburg, where he was particularly dedicated to youth ministries.

Walt is survived by his wife of 43 years, Elizabeth; his daughter, Rebecca Howland of Amherst, MA; four sisters, Jean (William) Robinson of Shippensburg, Cecelia (Dave) Schriner of Virginia, Diana (Michael) Kalb of Texas, and Evelyn (Steve) Vogelsong of Middlesex; and two brothers, Richard (Penny) Howland of Shippensburg and George (Sonja) Howland of Alabama. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, friends and loved ones whose lives he touched through his kind heart, loyal friendship, and exceptional generosity.

In addition to his parents, Walt was preceded in death by one sister, Amelia Howard.

His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, December 3, 2015, at the Memorial Lutheran Church, Shippensburg. Rev. Eric N. Anderson will officiate. Interment, with military honors conducted by the Shippensburg Area Veterans Council, will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery. Viewing will be one hour prior to the services on Thursday at the church.

Walt was particularly dedicated to service members, veterans, and their families; therefore, in lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made in his memory to the Wounded Warrior Project at P.O. Box 758517 Topeka, KS 66675.
