Elizabeth (Libby) Nispel, 89, of Shippensburg passed away at Menno Haven Nursing Home on October 20th. She was born April 23, 1922, in Shippensburg, PA, the daughter of the late John C. and Anna Myrtle Gardner Reeder. A 1940 graduate of Shippensburg High School, she earned two degrees from Shippensburg State College: a Bachelor of Science in 1943 and a Master of Education in 1961.
Elizabeth married Benjamin Strickler Nispel in 1943, and began her teaching career while her husband served in the European theater during World War II. From 1943-1957, she held a number of teaching positions, including New Cumberland School, Centerville School, Hallem School and York Schools. In 1957, Elizabeth and her family moved to Shippensburg. She continued to teach, first at Central School and then as a substitute throughout the Shippensburg Area School District, where her assignments ranged from grade school to undergraduate classes at Shippensburg State College.
Libby was an active member of Memorial Lutheran Church, serving as Deacon, Elder, Church Archivist, and choir member. She also played an active role in a number of community organizations. She was member of the Shippensburg Historical Society, as well as a docent of the historic Widow Piper’s Tavern. During her lifelong membership in the Kappa Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International Society, she served a term as Chapter President, and held a similar position while a member of the Shippensburg Civic Club. She was a volunteer and supporter of the Shippensburg University Fashion Archives and a member of the Faculty Wives.
She was a member of the Board of Directors of the Mental Health Association of Fulton and Franklin County, and served on the Southampton Township Planning Commission. She also served on the boards of the Shippensburg Public Library and the Festival Chamber Orchestra.
Elizabeth was an accomplished singer, seamstress, gardener, furniture refinisher, and preservationist. In addition, she enjoyed traveling, and, from 1991 to 2003, made a number of trips abroad, visiting Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Europe, and South America.
Elizabeth’s husband Benjamin preceded her in death in 1991. She is survived by her two children, John R. Nispel, of Tumwater, WA; Anne Nispel, of East Lansing, MI and their respective spouses, Gail Nispel and Harlan Jennings.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Shippensburg Public Library, 73 W. King Street, Shippensburg PA.
Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 24, at Memorial Lutheran Church. The Rev. Dr. Brenda J. Kiser will officiate. Interment will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery following the luncheon at the church. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services in the church.
