Dr. Thomas (“Tom”) L. Hozman, age 67, died at home in Shippensburg, PA at 3:01 p.m. on July 12, 2011 after a long battle with prostate cancer.
Born in Santa Monica, California on May 10, 1944 to the late Samuel and Ione Ash Hozman, Tom received his B.A. in philosophy in 1966 from St. John’s College in Camarillo, CA. After studying in the seminary at Gregorian University in Rome, Italy from 1966 to 1968, Tom received his California teaching credentials and taught elementary school in inner-city Watts, Los Angeles. He received his M.S. in 1971 and his Ph.D. in 1973 in Counseling Psychology from Purdue University in Lafayette, IN.
Tom was a Counseling Psychologist, Professor of Counseling, and Chair of the graduate Department of Counseling at Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania, where he taught from 1973 until his retirement in 2004. He also had a private practice as a marital and family therapist for twenty years, and served on the Board of Directors for Stevens Community Mental Health Center in Carlisle, PA. He received the “Counselor Educator of the Year Award” in 2000 from the Pennsylvania School Counselor Association.
Since 2004, Tom has been a consulting psychologist and trainer for organizations including the U.S. Department of Homeland Security; Federal Emergency Management Agency; U.S. Department of State; Pennsylvania State University, Dickinson School of Law, Deputy Sheriff Training Program; Supreme Court of Pennsylvania; Minor Judiciary Education Board; Argonne National Laboratory’s CSEPP program; Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Medical College.
Tom married Carol Ann Masaitis of Cleveland, OH on June 29, 1968. He is survived by his wife Carol; son Samuel Hozman of San Francisco, CA; daughter Sherilyn and her husband Nicholas DeNinno of White Plains, NY; brother Michael and his wife Michele Hozman of Kerrville, TX; sister Maryann and her husband Fred Griffith of Tulsa, OK; sister Cecelia Hozman and her husband John of Santa Barbara, CA and numerous other family members and close friends. He loved being a grandfather to his four grandchildren, Gwendolyn, Spencer, Samuel and Thomas.
Tom will be remembered for his sense of humor and ability to bring laughter to all those around him. He loved to teach, ski and travel the world, and frequently spent time in New York and San Francisco with his children and their families.
A celebration of Tom’s life will be held on Sunday, July 17, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home Inc, 112 West King Street, Shippensburg, PA 17257. Officiating will be The Rev. Michael E. Allwein. A visitation will be held from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
