Dr. Thayne W. Maurer, 89, of Shippensburg, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 18, 2021 at the Orrstown Personal Care Home, surrounded by his loving family.
Born Sunday, June 5, 1932 in Tremont, PA, he was the son of the late John H. and Sara I. Mayer Maurer.
Thayne was a 1950 graduate of the Tremont Senior High School, and a 1957 graduate of the Pennsylvania State College of Optometry. He served in the United States Army Reserves and the National Guard. He was a member of the Grace United Church of Christ.
Thayne had his own practice for 50 years with offices in Shippensburg, as well as Greencastle. He had a passion for his profession, and provided the utmost care for his patients.
He was a member of the Pennsylvania Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association. Thayne was a member of the Shippensburg Lions Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating at Raystown Lake, vacationing in Ocean City, MD, and Wildwood, NJ.
Thayne loved and cherished his family, and will be sadly missed by everyone that knew him.
Surviving are two sons, Thayne Gerald Maurer, and John Andrew (wife Ana) Maurer, all of Shippensburg; one daughter, Jill Tavish (husband Craig) Pinci, York Haven; six grandchildren, Travis Pinci, Jameson (wife Sara) Pinci, Johana Maurer, Jenifer Maurer, Mary Angela Pinci, and Anabelle Pinci; one great grandson, Ethan Andrew; one sister, Seray (husband Donald) Moyer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Virginia M. (Tavish) Maurer who passed away August 23, 2007; one grandson, Stephen Pinci; and one sister, Rose Smith.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Friday, December 3, 2021, at the Grace United Church of Christ, with the Rev. George W. Heckard officiating. Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post # 223 Minutemen. Visitation will be Friday morning from 10:00 a.m., until the time of the service.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and at the request of Thayne’s family, masks and social distancing must be observed by everyone in attendance.
