Dr. David Mackenzie

Dr. David F. MacKenzie, 83, of Shippensburg, died on the evening of Thursday, January 30, 2014, at Magnolias of Chambersburg.

He was born on August 27, 1930, in New Castle, a son of the late Joseph H. and Catherine Rayburn MacKenzie, Sr.

David was a 1948 graduate of New Castle High School and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He received his wings in just thirteen months, became a fighter pilot for the next four years, and was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant. After arriving back home, David married Ms. Betty J. Gann on June 19, 1955 and continued his education, earning a Degree in Dentistry from the University of Pittsburg in 1961.

David and Betty came to Shippensburg in 1961. Initially, he practiced with his cousin, Ramsey MacKenzie, and then eventually they opened up their own dentistry practice, retiring in 1999.

He was a member of the Christ United Methodist Church, Shippensburg; the Charles Nitterhouse V.F.W. Post #1599; the Burt J. Asper American Legion Post # 46; and the Chambersburg Club, all of Chambersburg. In his free time he enjoyed flying and woodworking.

David is survived by his two daughters, Joy L. (Joel Lesher) MacKenzie of Lancaster and Staceylea (Bill) Burke of Bethlehem; two granddaughters, Madison M. and Hayley E. Burke, both of Bethlehem; one sister, Phyllis G. Gray of Steubenville, OH; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Betty J. Gann MacKenzie, who died on December 19, 2013; his son, Kirk A. MacKenzie, who died in 1972; and his brother, Joseph H. MacKenzie, Jr.

His funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Monday, February 3, 2014, at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc., Shippensburg. The Rev. James O. Bolich will officiate. Interment, with military honors conducted by the Shippensburg Area Veterans Council, will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery. Viewing will be one hour prior to the service on Monday, at the funeral home.
