Douglas R. “Doug” Washinger, 70, of Shippensburg, passed away unexpectedly the morning of Thursday, January 25, 2024 at the Penn State Health Holy Spirit Medical Center.
He was born on December 27, 1953 in Chambersburg, a son of the late William F. “Bill” and Patricia A. “Patsy” Gutshall Washinger.
Doug retired as a floral designer. During his working years, he was employed by many local florists, including Fisher’s Florist in Shippensburg. He was also a manager of the former Forget-Me-Not Florist.
Doug was the president of the Shippensburg Kids Events Committee, formerly the Shippensburg Jaycees. Within the committee, he was the Halloween Parade Chairman for 36 consecutive years, spanning through the most recent Halloween parade in October of 2023. Doug also sat on the Chair of Reading Rainbow and was a member of the Cumberland Valley Lodge #315 F&AM, and Scottish Rite Valley of Harrisburg. He served on the Cumberland County Board of Elections for his Ward for a number of years.
He is survived by one sister, Brenda L. (Tony McCurdy) Washinger of Camp Hill; one nephew, Korey C. (Jen R.) Washinger of Catawba, NC; one niece, Drista N. Morris of Shippensburg; and three great-nieces, Shealyn R. Morris, Alona L. Morris, and Karizma R. Washinger.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Stanley E. Washinger.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc. Per Doug’s request, there will be no viewing or visitation. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 5, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at the Shippensburg Gazebo located at 131 West King Street, Shippensburg. Please bring a lawn chair.
