Douglas R. “Doug” Black, 80, of Shippensburg, passed away the morning of Sunday, September 10, 2023 at the Chambersburg Hospital.
He was born on Friday, February 26, 1943 in Huntingdon County, a son of the late Merrill E. Black and Roberta M. (Dickinson) Black Morrison. He married Elizabeth P. (VanScyoc) Black on November 20, 1965.
Doug was a faithful member of the Green Spring First Church of God since 1965 and was active in their New Life Sunday School. He was an avid tractor enthusiast, had a passion for woodworking, and was a member of the Williams Grove Association. His family will forever remember Doug as a kindhearted, giving man who dearly loved his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Elizabeth P. Black; two children, Melissa D. (Corey) Whisler of Newburg and Douglas M. Black of Shippensburg; four grandchildren, Brandon J. (Erin) Whisler of Newburg, Moriah F. Whisler of Dayton, OH, Kyle A. (Grace) Whisler of Shippensburg, and William R. Black of Shippensburg; two great-grandchildren, Keegan J. and Kinley N. Whisler, both of Newburg; and ten siblings, Alice Mathna of Shippensburg, Judy (Wesley) VanScyoc of Shippensburg, Dorothy (Edgar) Keebaugh of Chambersburg, Rose (Gary) Reed of Chambersburg, David (Donna) Black of Chambersburg, Robert Black of Orrstown, Wade (Avis) Black of Carlisle, Stephen (Debra) Black of Newburg, Tam (Jerry) Crider of Shippensburg, and Ruth (Ron) Shugart of Carlisle.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Juanita Martin.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 23, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. in the Green Spring First Church of God, Newville with Pastor Philip Steele officiating. Burial will follow in the Parklawns Memorial Gardens with military honors being conducted by the Minutemen of the American Legion Post #223. A viewing will be held Friday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc. and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
