Dorothy B. Wadel, 93, of Shippensburg, a woman who pursued God, loved the family, and served God by giving to others, died on the morning of Wednesday, January 14, 2015, at the Chambersburg Hospital.
She was born on February 28, 1921, in Shippensburg, a daughter of the late Jacob and Edith Hock Bard, and married Mr. Albert S. Wadel on June 20, 1942. He preceded her in death on April 11, 1989.
Dorothy was a “Domestic Engineer”, raising a very large family along-side her husband, Albert. She was a ‘culinary queen”, an excellent seamstress, and a master gardener of both flowers and vegetables, winning many awards at the Shippensburg Community Fair for her efforts. She was an active member of the Living Faith Chapel, Shippensburg, supporting with her time and alms, many Christian organizations, as well as many local people in need. Dorothy also volunteered to assist in the Release Time Program, at the former Mainsville School, for many years.
She is survived by five sons, Larry A (Sharon) Wadel of Shippensburg, Jay A. (Barbara) Wadel of Chambersburg, Dwight L. (Jodi) Wadel of Chambersburg, Lyle R. (Teresa) Wadel of Shippensburg, and Lee E. (Sally) Wadel of Shippensburg; four daughters, Lillie W. (Peter) Basso of Rockville, MD, Linda A. Spero of Scotland, Sally J. (John) Pugh of Denver, and Donna L. (Harold) Bowers of Hancock, MD; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-seven great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Dorothy was preceded in death by an infant son, Glen E. Wadel, three brothers, Melvin, Robert, and Harry Bard and three sisters, Ina Beattie, Edna Barmont, and Esther Gephart.
Her viewing will be on Saturday, January 17, 2015, from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., at the Prince Street United Brethren Church, Shippensburg; followed by her funeral service, starting at 2:00 p.m. Pastor William Kesecker and Pastor Eldon Martin will officiate. Interment will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery.
