Dorothy M. Singiser, 94, a resident of Green Ridge Village, Newville, formerly of Cumberland Ave., Shippensburg, died Tuesday, September 23, 2014.
She was born May 5, 1920 in Shippensburg. Dorothy was a daughter of the late Rolla McClay and Vera Sprecher Mellinger.
She was an Elementary Teacher for 31 years, retiring in 1980 from the Shippensburg Area School District. Dorothy started her teaching career in a country school (grades 1-8) during World War II. She was a long time member of Memorial Lutheran Church and their Joy Bearers Sunday School Class. Dorothy was a member of the Shippensburg Historical Society, Fort Morris Chapter A.A.R.P. # 2525 and the Cumberland County Retired Teachers Association. She volunteered with Shippensburg’s Meals on Wheels and was a graduate of the former Shippensburg State Teacher’s College.
She enjoyed traveling with her husband, brothers, and sisters, walking and hiking, and most of all attending her grandchildren’s events.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard N. Singiser who died January 13, 1988. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Glenn Mellinger, and one sister Mildred Reindollar.
She is survived by one son, Richard M. (Kathy) Singiser of Boiling Springs, one daughter, Pamela Joan (Kent) Roberts of Shippensburg, one brother, Donald (Pearl) Mellinger of Shippensburg, one sister Betty Lehman of Reading, two grandsons, Richard H. (Heather) Singiser of Atlanta, GA, and Timothy A. (Elaine) Singiser of Abilene, TX, and six nieces.
Funeral services will be held Monday, September 29, 2014 in the Memorial Lutheran Church, Shippensburg at 11 a.m. Officiating will be The Rev. Dr. Brenda J. Kiser. Burial will be held in Spring Hill Cemetery. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the services in church.
