Dorothy Gephart Dyer, 98, died peacefully at her home in Shippensburg Saturday, January 29, 2011.
Born August 14, 1912 near Shippensburg, she was one of four children of the late Clark Gephart and Dora Belle Rosenberry Gephart and grew up on the family farm just outside of town.
She graduated from Shippensburg Normal School (now Shippensburg University) in 1930 and began teaching school in the coal-mining town of Robertsdale at the age of 19. In her initial position, she taught 65 first graders, none of whom spoke English on their first day of school. She met Vernon Dyer, a music teacher in the same school, and the two were married on August 14, 1939.
Dot taught in the Shippensburg area schools for over 20 years, including a stint in a one-room schoolhouse near Newburg. After retiring from teaching she served the community by being an active volunteer with Meals on Wheels. She and Vernon enjoyed widespread travels both in the United States and to international destinations, going to live theater and dancing. She was also an avid gardener in her yard, and a very involved grandmother to her four grandchildren
Dot was a founding member of Messiah United Methodist Church (formerly the Evangelical United Brethern Church), which she first attended as a small child with her grandmother. She headed up the children’s program there for many years and was a faithful member of the choir.
Dot Dyer is survived by her daughters, Marilynn Sue Klopp (spouse Eric) of Walnut Bottom and Judith Dyer (Robert Butsic) of San Francisco, her grandchildren: Christopher Klopp (Keziah), David Klopp, Jennifer Ettinger (Brian) and Matthew Klopp (Katie) two great grandchildren, and one niece, Kathleen Haberkost (Greg).
She was predeceased by her husband in 2004, her daughter, Patricia Dyer, in 1995, her sister, Ruth Abbey, in 2008 and her sister, Mary Gephart, in December, 2010.
The funeral service will be held Friday, February 4, at 2:00PM in Messiah United Methodist Church, 30 South Penn Street, Shippensburg, Pa 17257. Burial will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service in the church. Memorial contributions can be made to her church at 30 South Penn Street.
