Donald M. “Donnie” Varner, 75, of Newville, entered into eternal rest on the morning of Saturday, July 19, 2014, at the Harrisburg Hospital.
He was born on January 17, 1939, in Oakville, a son of the late Roy F. and Esther E. Zinn Varner.
Donald was employed as a Repairman at the former Anthony’s/Goods Furniture store, Newville, for thirty years, retiring in 2002. He also had previously worked at Corning Glass, Greencastle, earlier in life.
He was a member of the Hays Grove United Methodist Church, the Failor-Wagner American Legion Post #421 and V.F.W. Post #6070, both of Newville, and the Big Spring Fish and Game. In the 60’s and 70’s Donald raced cars at the local area dirt tracks and beyond and then became a pit crew mechanic after he stopped driving for himself. He also liked to listen to bluegrass music.
Donald is survived by his companion, Nena Chapman of Newville; his son, Donald M. (Tammy J.) Varner, Jr., of Shippensburg; two grandchildren, Jill L. Varner of Shippensburg and Kyle L (fiance’Ashley) Varner of Lemoyne; his brother, Leroy E. (Evelyn) Varner of Carlisle; sister, Gloria J. (Joel) Anthony of Newville; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Donald was preceded in death by his second wife, Elvia J. Varner and two brothers, Roy Varner, Jr. and Harold E. Varner.
His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Thursday, July 24, 2014, at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc., Shippensburg. The Rev. Barbara A. Servello will officiate. Interment will follow in the Hays Grove Cemetery. Viewing will be Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and one hour prior to the services on Thursday, at the funeral home.
