Donald M. Varner 89, life-long resident of Shippensburg, departed this life on the evening of Monday, February 19, 2018, at the Chambersburg Hospital.
He was born on September 29, 1928, in Shippensburg, a son of the late Harry James and Anna Marjorie Meredith Varner, Sr. Don was a veteran of W.W. II, serving in the U.S. Navy and then the U.S. Army, honorably discharged on November 1, 1952. He married Ms. Dolores Gonzalez on June 2, 1951, while stationed in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Don was an inspector at the Letterkenny Army Depot, retiring in 1988, after thirty-one years of work. He was a life-member of the Path Valley American Legion McCartney Post #232, Spring Run, and enjoyed attending the Branch Creek Place. Don enjoyed hunting and fishing, liked to do crossword puzzles, and he also liked to work on cars.
In addition to his wife of sixty-seven years, Dolores, he is survived by two children, Gail C. (Michael) Rosenberry of Orrstown, and Denny M. (DeAnn) Varner of Chambersburg; three grandchildren, Brooke K. (Chris) Nordai of Harrisburg, Lindsay J. (Chris) Cicconi of Mt. Lebanon; and Jamie Varner of Germany; three great grandchildren, Ava and Maxwell Nordai and Gemma Cicconi and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Don was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers.
His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc., Shippensburg. The Rev. Marlin “Butch” Neil will officiate. Interment, with military honors will follow in the Amberson Union Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Don’s memory, may be made to the Branch Creek Place at 115 North Fayette Street Shippensburg, PA 17257.
His family would specifically like to thank Don’s wonderful neighbors at Shippensburg Village. They truly exemplify the term “good neighbors” and provided much joy, caring, and companionship for Don and Dolores for the past thirteen years. Also, Don’s family would like to express their deep appreciation to the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Chambersburg Hospital for their kindness, caring, and professionalism.
