Donald S. Mellinger, 94, of Shippensburg, departed this life on the evening of Monday, September 4, 2017.
He was born on October 28, 1922, in Southampton Twp., Cumberland Co., a son of the late Rolla and Vera Sprecher Mellinger.
Donald was a 1940 graduate of Shippensburg High School and worked as a machinist at the Steelton Plant of the former Bethlehem Steel Corp. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II, inducted on April 12, 1944 and honorably discharged on May 4, 1946, after serving in both the European (convoy duty in the North Atlantic) and Asiatic Pacific theaters of operation. He was a long-time member of the Middle Spring Presbyterian Church where he taught Church School for forty years, was Ordained a Ruling Elder in 1948, and served as Clerk of Sessions for twenty-eight years. Donald was a member of the Fort Morris Chapter of the AARP, the Shippensburg Historical Society, Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post #223 and the Durff-Kuhn V.F.W. Post #6168, both of Shippensburg; the C.W.H. McCleary Post of the Disabled American Veterans, Chambersburg; and the Destroyer Escort Sailors Association.
He is survived by one sister, Betty M. (Mrs. Bennie) Lehman of Reading; step-son, Gerald A. Groce & wife Peggy of Shippensburg; two step-granddaughters; four step great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Donald was preceded in death by his first wife of fifty-six years, Marguerite Coover Mellinger, who died on August 14, 2002; his second wife, Pearl Diehl Groce Mellinger, who died on June 13, 2017; his brother, Glenn W. Mellinger; and two sisters, Mildred M. (Mrs. Robert) Reindollar and Dorothy M. (Mrs. Richard) Singiser.
His funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Monday, September 11, 2017, at the Middle Spring Presbyterian Church, Shippensburg. The Rev. Kimberley D. Wadlington and Rev. James R. Richwine will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow in the Spring Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc., Shippensburg and one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Middle Spring Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund.
