Dolora Mitten

May 7, 1924 — June 2, 2015

Dolora LaRue Mitten, of Shippensburg, met her Savior face to face on June 2, 2015 in her home and surrounded by many of her loving family.

Dolora was born May 7, 1924, in Woodvale, Pa., to the late Earle and Leone (Bradley) Scott. She was preceded in death by her brother Merideith “Buddy” Scott. Following graduation from Robertsdale High School, they moved to Shippensburg to help establish the Church of the Nazarene, of which she has been an active member since.

She attended Thompson and Central Penn Institutes before supporting WWII efforts repairing aircraft engines at Omstead Air Force Base, earning a military draftsman certificate. Following the war, she worked at Letterkenny Army Depot as a bookkeeping machine operator. She was a member of the Shippensburg Junior Civic Club and held positions with the Historical Society including registry of buildings.

She was skilled as a musician and an artist, craftsperson, painter, and seamstress who could fashion something decorative and beautiful out of simple objects. She had great appreciation and sensibility towards the arts and music.

She held various positions at her church and was an inspiration to many friends and neighbors. She was widely known for her unique sense of humor and faith in God.

Dolora and her husband, the late Lewis K. “Sonny” Mitten, were married in 1949. She is survived by three sons, Ted (Perrysburg, OH), Brian and Larry (Shippensburg), and two daughters, Darla Illo (Shippensburg) and Sherre Mitten-Bell (Camp Hill). She enjoyed the company of and took great pride in achievements of their thirteen grandchildren and thirty-one great-grandchildren. Her creativity and talents influenced them all.
Services will be held Saturday, June 6, 2015 at 2:30 p.m. in the Shippensburg Church of the Nazarene with Rev. Blair McKim officiating. Burial will be held in the Spring Hill Cemetery. A viewing will be held Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. in the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Shippensburg.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Church of the Nazarene Missions Fund, 415 East Orange Street, Shippensburg, PA 17257.
