David Joseph Swanger, 84, of Shippensburg, went to be with his Lord on the morning of February 25, 2012.
He was born on September 24, 1927, in Shippensburg, a son of the late John Abram and Celia Anna Nye Swanger. David was a 1946 graduate of the Shippensburg Senior High School and on June 21, 1947, he married Ms. Olivia (Beam) on June 21, 1947.
Prior to his retirement in 1990, he was employed for many years by the Pizzagalli Construction Company, in Vermont; drove truck for Kuhn Transportation, was a self employed carpenter; and in his earlier years worked for Herbert C. Mathna Carpentry.
David was a life-long member of the Mongul United Brethren Church and was a senior life- member of the Hub City Club, both of Shippensburg.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Olivia (Beam) Swanger; three sons, David Athley Swanger and his wife Betsy of Shippensburg, Keith Beam Swanger and his wife Lucy of Roxbury, and Mark Alan Swanger and his wife Kelly of New Germantown; two brothers, Glenn Swanger of Culbertson and Harold Swanger and his wife Sue (Ruth) of Shippensburg; four grandchildren, Stephanie Helm of Florida, Selena Swanger of Shippensburg, Mark Swanger of Red Lion, and Bobbie Sue Swanger of Roxbury; four great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
David was preceded in death by one grandson, Scott Swanger; five half-brothers, Chuck, Pete, John, Paul, and Robert; and three half-sisters, Josephine, Melva, and Dorothy.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, March 2, 2012, at the Mongul United Brethren Church. Interment will follow in the Mongul Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the services on Friday afternoon, at church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of David, to the Better Days Animal Shelter at 12310 Mongul Hill Rd. Shippensburg, PA 17257.
