David Horneys

David C. Horneys, 91, passed away the morning of February 22, 2023 at Menno Haven in Chambersburg.

He was born on September 13, 1931 in Plymouth, Indiana, a son of the late Warren R. and Ruth M. Horneys. David was the oldest of four boys, Rees, Robert, and Donald and grew up on a farm in Hamlet, Indiana.

David graduated from Purdue University with an Engineering Degree and later earned his Master’s degree of Mechanical Engineering from Iowa State University.

Mr. Horneys met the love of his life, Carole J. Cortright, of Waterloo, Iowa, at John Deere and they shared almost 69 years of marriage together. Their marriage blessed them with two children. John Warren Horneys, born March 7, 1956, preceded David in death on June 1, 2009. Their second child, Jill Horneys Roach Brown, was a graduate of Shippensburg Area Senior High School in 1978 and currently resides in Lexington, Kentucky and Pompano Beach, Florida.

David received orders immediately following his marriage on April 17, 1954 and served as an officer in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict, where he earned the Korean Service Medal. They lived in Fukukoa, Japan, where they welcomed their son, John.

The Horneys family settled in Muscatine, Iowa for 12 years, where David worked for Prime Mover, Hon Industries.

In 1974, the Horneys family moved to Shippensburg, PA, where David was the Chief Engineer for Ingersol Rand. He later worked for ITT Domestic Pump, with lots of activity between.

David was known for his generosity, kindness, and active nature. He volunteered for Habitat for Humanity for over 20 years. Two weeks prior to his death, he was riding his bike five miles a day, and playing water volleyball, bridge, and croquet. He was known as “Mr. Fix It,” and was a help to anyone that needed something fixed around the house. Dave and his wife were active in square dancing for more than 35 years.

In addition to his son, John, and three stillborn grandsons who preceded him in death, Mr. David Horneys leaves behind his wife of 69 years, Carole J. Horneys; his daughter, Jill Horneys Roach Brown; seven grandchildren, Christina Roach (Dr. Glen) Thompson, Jessica Caroline Roach, David R. Horneys, Jonathan (Callie) Horneys, Benjamin Horneys, Bethany Horneys (Jason L.) Mcquire, and Elliot Horneys; two great-grandchildren, Paislee and Oaklynn Horneys; and a daughter-in-law, Wendy Foster Horneys.

A visitation for friends and family will be held on Friday, February 24, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Menno Haven Life Center, 300 Ridgeview, Chambersburg, PA 17201. David will be privately laid to rest in the Spring Hill Cemetery.
