David W. Burd, 83, life-long resident of Newburg, departed this life on the afternoon of Monday, May 2, 2016.
He was born on December 15, 1932, in Newburg, a son of the late Clarence Burd and Grace Hoffman Burd Hefflefinger. David was a U.S. Army veteran, inducted on March 10, 1953 and honorably discharged on March 9, 1955. He was the Commander of the Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post #223, Shippensburg in 1997 and 1998 and was also a member of their Honor Guard attending many military funeral and parades. David had the honor of being the parade marshal for the 2015 Shippensburg Memorial Day Parade.
David was employed as a service technician for Exxon Mobil, retiring after 42 years of work. He was one of twenty nine charter member of the Newburg-Hopewell Volunteer Fire Co. and was the head of their fire police for twelve years until he went blind. David was a former Scout Master of Troop #118, a Noble Grand of the I.O.O.F., and served as High Priest of Valley Encampment #34. He was a Past Master of the Orrstown Lodge #262 F. & A.M.; served as a Trustee of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon; a member of the Harrisburg Consistory 32nd degree; and a Past President of the Shippensburg Scottish Rite.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, whom he married on June 24, 1962, Linda E. Richardson Burd; three daughters, Leola Driskell (wife of the late Walter Driskell), Katie Drexler (wife of Steven Drexler), and Beverly Provazzo (wife of Christopher Provazzo); six grandchildren; two great granddaughters; one sister, Sara Ann Godwin (wife of William Godwin); and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, David was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Stolte and William Burd.
His funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Friday, May 6, 2016 at the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home, Inc., Shippensburg. The Rev. John Byers will officiate. Interment, with military honors conducted by the Shippensburg Area Veterans Council, will follow in the Prospect Hill Cemetery, Newville. Viewing will be Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Masonic Rites taking place at 7:30 p.m.
