David A. Bender, 89, of Newburg, passed away Wednesday, April 13, 2016 in the Chambersburg Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Born Saturday, February 12, 1927 in Lurgan Township, Franklin County, he was a son of the late David Henry and Florence Ida Kauffman Bender.
David was a United States Army Veteran serving with the 88th Blue Devils 350 Infantry Company I during WWII. He was a life member of the Oscar M. Hykes American Legion Post # 223, Shippensburg.
David was a member of the Newburg First Church of God where he held many positions including Elder, Deacon, and Financial Secretary with 32 years of service, he taught the 6thgrade Sunday School Class; he helped with home visitations and was very active in the Junior Church and the Men’s Bible Class.
He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, bowling, gardening, and traveling.
Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Rose L. Rotz Bender, two daughters; Sharon L. (Alan) Mathna, Chambersburg, Sandra J. Weibley, Carlisle, three sons; Robert D. (Tammy) Bender, Newburg, Larry E. Bender, Carlisle, and Stephen L. Bender ( companion Kelli Bowermaster ) Shippensburg, one brother, Harold Milton Bender, eight grandchildren; Nicole (Jeremy) Rhone, Jared Weibley, Erika (David) Tase, Katlynn , Kelly, Madeline and Zoe Bender, Kara Bowermaster, and one great granddaughter, Karissa Krause.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Joyce Ann Bender, six brothers; Earl, Samuel, Crawford, Wayne, Kenneth, and Robert Bender, and son in-law Robert J. Weibley, Jr.
Funeral services will be held, Monday, April 18, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in the Newburg First Church of God with the Rev. Dale H. Miller, Jr. and Pastor Bill Myers officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hall Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by the Shippensburg Veterans Council. A viewing will be held Sunday, from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. in the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service on Monday in the church.
