Daniel Spero

October 17, 1945 — August 7, 2023

Daniel Spero, 77, of Scotland, PA passed away in his home on the evening of Monday, August 7th, 2023, surrounded by beloved family and friends. He was a man that has given so much time, labor, and advice to his community, neighbors, and other individuals throughout the years.

Dan was born on October 17, 1945, in Shippensburg, PA, a son of the late Kenneth and Ruth Spero. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, enlisting on August 1, 1963, and honorably discharged on July 31, 1967. Dan married Deborah F. Carter on August 9, 1969, in the Prince Street United Brethren Church, Shippensburg. She preceded him in death just five months ago, on March 2, 2023. Dan worked at the Letterkenny Army Depot as a mechanic, retiring in 2008.

If you knew Dan, then you know:
He could fix it!!!!!
He could repair it!!!!!
He could find it!!!!!
He could install it!!!!!
He could build it!!!!!

When the lawnmower was broken, he would fix it. When tenants had leaks and breaks, he was the answer man. When the world needed their car’s air conditioner recharged, he was up for the task. If someone needed a stove, refrigerator, air conditioner, furniture, car, boat, or plane, Dan had the sources to find these things, and the price would be very acceptable.

When his sister was sick, he knocked at her door saying, “Let me know what I can do for you,” and was known for fixing things when there was urgent need, and nobody else was willing to come. Everyone who knew Dan was very grateful for him and his selfless nature.

He is survived by his two sons, Eric Spero and wife Meng Shang of Tabernacle, NJ, and Kirk Spero and fiance’ Mary Marcopul of Ephrata, PA; two grandsons, Jordin and Jonathan Spero, both of Ephrata; a sister, Janet Rebuck of Newburg; beloved extended family Chuck and Millie Gilbert, also of Newburg; several nieces and nephews; and many other family and friends who will miss being able to drop in for coffee and good conversation at any time.

In addition to his parents and beloved wife of fifty-four years, Dan was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Perry; and a brother, Kenneth Spero.

Many, especially the people in Scotland, have benefited greatly from his life. Dan always took initiative to “JUST DO IT” and never asked for much in return. He truly had a servant’s heart and came to the rescue of many people on many occasions. Many people felt blessed that Dan and Deb Spero have touched their lives.

His funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Fogelsanger-Bricker Funeral Home & Crematorium, Inc., Shippensburg. There will be no viewing, visitation, or funeral service at this time. However, there will be a public celebration of Dan’s life, held in his beloved community of Scotland, at a future date and time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter at 5150 Letterkenny Road West, Chambersburg, PA, 17201.
